“Run, Hide, Fight” is a critical protocol used in active shooter training for civilians. CIRTS provides a structured response strategy to enhance survival during such an incident. The CIRTS approach offers a clear and actionable framework for civilians to follow in a high-stress, life-threatening situation.
Key Components of “Run, Hide, Fight”:
1. Run:
• Escape Prioritization: The first and foremost action is to escape the vicinity of the active shooter if it is safe to do so.
• Leave Belongings: Abandon personal items to facilitate faster movement and minimize distractions.
• Help Others if Possible: Encourage others to leave with you, but do not let their hesitation slow you down. Prioritize your safety.
• Prevent Others from Entering: If possible, warn others to stay away from the danger area without exposing yourself to further risk.
• Call 911 When Safe: Once you are in a safe location, call emergency services to report the situation, providing as much detail as possible about the shooter and the location.
2. Hide:
• Find a Secure Hiding Spot: If escape is not feasible, find a place out of the shooter’s view, preferably with a lockable door or substantial barriers to prevent entry.
• Stay Quiet: Silence your phone, turn off lights, and remain as quiet as possible to avoid drawing attention.
• Barricade: Use furniture or heavy objects to fortify the door and block entry points, making it difficult for the shooter to gain access.
• Be Prepared to Move: Stay alert and ready to move if the shooter approaches or if a safer escape route becomes available.
• Communicate Quietly: If you need to communicate with others or authorities, do so silently or through text messages.
3. Fight:
• Last Resort: Engage in physical confrontation only if your life is in imminent danger and there are no other options.
• Commit to Your Actions: Be as aggressive as possible to incapacitate the shooter. Use improvised weapons, such as chairs, fire extinguishers, or any available objects.
• Work as a Team: If you are not alone, coordinate with others to collectively overpower the shooter.
• Aim for Vital Areas: Target the shooter’s vulnerable areas, such as the head, neck, and eyes, to maximize your effectiveness.
• Disarm and Subdue: Attempt to control or remove the weapon from the shooter and secure it until authorities arrive.
Implementation and Training:
• Scenario-Based Training: Practice “Run, Hide, Fight” scenarios through drills and simulations to build familiarity and confidence in responding under pressure.
• Situational Awareness: Encourage awareness of exits, potential hiding spots, and security protocols in everyday environments to enhance preparedness.
• Psychological Preparedness: Train individuals to manage fear and stress, making clear-headed decisions during an incident.
By following the CIRTS “Run, Hide, Fight” protocols, civilians are better equipped to protect themselves and others in the event of an active shooter situation, significantly increasing their chances of survival.
